Four Pillars of Musculoskeletal Infection Care

EBJIC addresses the most complex clinical scenarios facing orthopaedic surgeons today, delivering step-by-step diagnostic, surgical, and antimicrobial algorithms.

FRI

Fracture-Related Infection

Comprehensive diagnostic and surgical pathways for infection following trauma, internal fixation, and infected non-unions.

Clinical Instruction Scope:

  • Consensus diagnostic criteria and confirmatory microbiology
  • Hardware retention vs. removal vs. revision fixation
  • Local antimicrobial delivery (antibiotic beads, spacers, nails)
  • Management of segmental bone defects and dead-space management
PBJI

Pediatric Bone & Joint Infection

Nuanced clinical protocols for acute hematogenous osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, and subacute infection in growing skeletons.

Clinical Instruction Scope:

  • Emergency evaluation and imaging in the irritable limping child
  • Surgical decompression techniques that preserve the physis
  • Age-specific pathogen identification (Kingella, CA-MRSA, S. aureus)
  • Sequential parenteral-to-oral antimicrobial step-down regimens
DFI

Diabetic Foot Infection

Multidisciplinary limb-preservation protocols addressing vascular status, neuropathy, deep tissue abscesses, and osteomyelitis.

Clinical Instruction Scope:

  • IWGDF infection classification and probe-to-bone validation
  • Epidemiology and multidisciplinary assessment of infected Charcot foot and ankle
  • Risk-factor evaluation, imaging, laboratory workup, and infection diagnosis
  • Antimicrobial therapy, immobilisation, off-loading, and pre-reconstruction optimisation
  • Debridement, limb stabilisation, soft-tissue reconstruction, and recurrence management
PJI

Prosthetic Joint Infection

Evidence-based algorithms for hip and knee arthroplasty infections, from early acute presentations to refractory chronic biofilm infections.

Clinical Instruction Scope:

  • Synovial fluid analysis, alpha-defensin, and next-generation sequencing
  • DAIR indications, surgical thoroughness, and mobile bearing exchange
  • Single-stage vs. Two-stage exchange protocols and spacer design
  • Salvage procedures: arthrodesis, resection arthroplasty, and amputation

Convenor's Welcome Address

Advancing Care, Defeating Infection Together

“Infection remains one of the most devastating and humbling challenges in modern orthopaedic surgery. EBJIC was founded on a singular conviction: that defeating infection requires rigorous evidence, multidisciplinary consensus, and step-by-step surgical discipline.”

Dear Colleagues and Esteemed Doctors, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd Egyptian Bone & Joint Infection Course (EBJIC 2026). Following the success and participant engagement of our inaugural edition in 2025, this year’s curriculum brings an even deeper focus on practical decision-making in the operating room and the multidisciplinary clinic.

Bone and joint infections cannot be tackled with generic antibiotic prescriptions or casual surgical debridement. They demand a deep understanding of pathogen biofilms, reliable microbiological sampling, dead-space management, and meticulous revision techniques. In EBJIC 2026, we examine the four critical pillars: Fracture-Related Infection (FRI), Prosthetic Joint Infection (PJI), Pediatric Bone & Joint Infection, and Diabetic Foot Infection.

We have curated an intensive three-day scientific agenda pairing case-based debates with evidence-based instructional lectures led by our regional organizing committee and distinguished international guest faculty. I warmly invite you to join us in Cairo at the Triumph Plaza Hotel this December as we advance patient care and defeat musculoskeletal infection.
